Pancreas Multidisciplinary Program Manager /Physician Associate

The Department of Surgery at the Mount Sinai Health System is recruiting a physician associate to serve as the manager of clinical care for the Pancreatic Multidisciplinary Program under the direction of the Program’s Physician Co-Directors. The PA Manager ensures timely access and seamless coordination of services through the continuum of comprehensive cancer care. The PA Manager  meets with patient and families to provide emotional support, patient education, teaching, and guidance following the diagnosis of cancer through treatment, survivorship, and end stage disease, if necessary. The NPC provides clinical information, education, and shares knowledge regarding support services and resources. The NPC facilitates rapid scheduling and coordination of follow-up care. The PA-C is a professional member of the multidisciplinary care team promoting optimal patient care. The PA-C may provide direct patient care in emergencies.

The PA in this position will support multiple providers in the pancreatic ambulatory practice. This position works in a multidisciplinary fashion to coordinate care between various specialties including surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, and radiology. This PA-C will be involved in clinical trials, patient education, symptom triage, and transitions of care.

Primary functions of the position include coordinating, triaging, and organizing patient flow as well as conducting patient visits under the supervision of attending physicians and surgeons. 

Job summary : Works as primary coordinator for the Pancreas Multidisciplinary Program, which includes the organization and facilitation of a weekly clinic and conference with Pancreas Cancer specialists including surgical oncologists, medical oncologists and radiation oncologists.

Responsibilities

Clinical duties include:

  • Discussions with patients regarding information about the program, flow of appointment and tests that will be performed.
  • Advisement of patient scheduling based on concern of disease.
  • Ensuring all specialty providers are staffed in clinic each week.
  • Reviewing medical records to determine if appropriate for clinic.
  • Requesting outside diagnostic tests and pathology/cytology as needed.
  • Generating weekly lists of patients to be discussed at conference.
  • Organizes and facilitates weekly clinic. 
  • Organizes and leads weekly conference.
  • Ordering and interpretation of labs or diagnostic tests needed prior to multidisciplinary review.
  • Prescribing medications as needed, including pre-procedure medications.
  • Conducting peer to peer review or writing medical necessity letters with insurance companies for pre-authorization of tests as appropriate.
  • Speaking with referring physicians regarding patient referrals.
  • Independently performing age appropriate history and physical examinations for complex acute, critical and chronically ill patients. Invasive examinations (such as rectal examinations) will be deferred to attending physician. 
  • Sending new patient letters to referring physicians using EPIC system. 
  • Independently seeing patients in follow up as needed.
  • Collaboration with team members after conference to finalize patient plans and assisting with ordering tests and referrals as needed
  • Accurate and efficient documentation in EPIC system.
  • Contacting referring physicians/PCP for any other medical issues that may have been discovered or referring patient to appropriate specialty/provider as needed
  • Contacting surgeon’s office to facilitate perioperative management and OR scheduling as needed.
  • Contacting medical/radiation oncology office to facilitate oncologic treatment as needed.
  • Facilitating staff, patient and family decision making by providing educational tools.
  • Collaborates with care team about treatment plan.
  • Translates complex medical terminology and answers questions.
  • Providing patients with hospital resources as needed.

Research duties include:

  • Identifying patients eligible for clinical trial participation
  • Participating in research in conjunction with faculty expectations.
  • Tracking patient outcomes/data.

Qualifications

Education and Experience Requirements 

  • Graduation from Accredited Physician Assistant Program, Masters preferred NCCPA Board Certification (5 YEARS)
  • New York State Licensure (3 years) 
  • DEA Licensure (3 years)
  • BLS and ACLS Certificate on (2 years)
  • Infection Control Certification (4 years)
  • 3+ years of outpatient experience required
  • Managerial experience preferable

The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides salary ranges that comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $115494 - $192328 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and operational need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
