Description A respected Bay Area nonprofit focused on advancing justice for LGBTQ+ communities is seeking a contract immigration attorney to support the delivery of specialized legal services to low-income LGBTQ+ immigrants. This part-time role was created through dedicated grant funding and is designed to increase legal capacity in support of a growing caseload serving a highly vulnerable population. Working closely with the organization's legal team, the attorney will contribute to high-impact immigration matters, including affirmative and defensive asylum, U-visas, legal permanent residency applications, spousal petitions, and related forms of relief. Additional projects may include habeas petitions for detained individuals and writs of mandamus to compel long-delayed asylum interviews. The program's caseload exceeds 140 active clients, with a key focus on supporting those facing urgent filing deadlines and navigating complex, long-term matters. This is a flexible, deadline-driven role-ideal for an experienced immigration attorney who can dedicate 8-10 hours per week to mission-aligned legal work. Key Responsibilities + Draft and support legal filings related to asylum, humanitarian relief, and family-based immigration matters + Conduct legal consultations and case assessments to help shape case strategy + Assist with preparing immigration forms, supporting declarations, and evidentiary documentation + Collaborate with in-house staff and pro bono attorneys; contribute to case planning and share legal insight + Maintain accurate, detailed case notes and support ongoing case progress + Contribute to grant-related deliverables, including tracking outputs and supporting the program's service delivery model + Attend in-person client meetings, hearings, or related proceedings in the San Francisco Bay Area as needed, in coordination with the legal team and pro bono counsel Requirements Qualifications + J.D. and active bar membership in California (required) + At least 3 years of experience in immigration law, including direct involvement in asylum, removal defense, or related humanitarian matters + Familiarity with LGBTQ+ asylum claims and humanitarian relief options (e.g., U-visas, DACA, spousal petitions, legal permanent residency) + High proficiency or fluency in Spanish and/or Portuguese strongly preferred + Experience working with LGBTQ+ and immigrant communities preferred + Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex legal concepts clearly and compassionately + Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently within a collaborative team + Proficiency in Cerenade (case management), Microsoft Word, Adobe, and other legal tools + Availability to commit 8-10 hours/week and to travel onsite in San Francisco for hearings or client meetings as needed Whether you're looking for a mission-aligned side project or hoping to stay engaged in direct service alongside your primary practice, this opportunity allows you to make a measurable difference in the lives of vulnerable community members.
