Weekend Assistant Producer, WNYC News (part-time)
Every day, the WNYC Newsroom seeks to deliver smart, enterprising news content to its various audiences with the goal of making New York work for New Yorkers. Our weekend shows Weekend Edition and Weekend All Things Considered are central to that effort.
We are looking for a part-time Assistant Producer to help bolster WNYC’s weekend coverage. This journalist should be passionate about daily news and have experience in audio journalism. They should be a proven self-starter with strong instincts for good stories. They must be nimble, dogged in pursuit of the news, and sharply focused on what our audiences need. They must be self-reliant and feel comfortable working across multiple shifts and supporting different staff – from breaking news editors to show hosts to beat reporters. And they must have a passion for New York City and the surrounding region.
The Assistant Producer will work 17 hours a week, including a planning shift every Friday and two shifts over the weekend. The schedule is subject to change based on news demands and staffing needs.
This position reports to the Editor of Magazine Shows and Newscasts.
Responsibilities
Assist day-of editors and hosts in monitoring for and responding to breaking news
Gather and edit audio remotely
Gather audio in the field, as assigned
Write newscast stories and other material for broadcast
Write content for Gothamist and the WNYC website, as assigned
Pitch story ideas with an eye towards bolstering weekend programming
Book guests and script host interviews
Qualifications
At least one year of professional journalism experience
Experience with audio editing
Excellent communication skills, written and spoken
Effective time-management and ability to meet tight deadlines
Proven ability to pay close attention to detail and fact-checking
Deep commitment to ethical journalism
Demonstrated commitment and ability to contribute an equity lens to their work
Additional Information
This is a part-time non-exempt role with an hourly rate of $36.1854 per hour.
This role currently operates in a hybrid capacity with the ability to work from home. However, the expectation is that this individual will work from the WNYC Newsroom in Lower Manhattan on specified days with regularity.
This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between New York Public Radio and SAG-AFTRA.
